I want to share a reading with you today. I’ve been editing blog posts and features to help future brides and grooms prepare for their weddings. Tips on flowers, cake, decorations and all the fun little details. In all my planning and writing I realised that something was missing. After all, as great as these things are, the most important thing is that you are vowing to love one another for the rest of your life with God and your families. So I thought I would share one of my favorite wedding readings. (This is also probably a great time to remind you to ask a family member and/or friend to be a reader for your wedding and to select the readings too.)

A reading from the Book of Tobit

On their wedding night Tobiah arose from bed and said to his wife,

“Sister, get up. Let us pray and beg our Lord to have mercy on us and to grant us deliverance.”

Sarah got up, and they started to pray and beg that deliverance might be theirs.

They began with these words:

“Blessed are you, O God of our fathers;

praised be your name forever and ever.

Let the heavens and all your creation praise you forever.

You made Adam and gave him his wife Eve to be his help and support;

You said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; let us make him a partner like himself.’

Now, Lord, you know that I take this wife of mine not because of lust, but for a noble purpose.

Call down your mercy on me and her, and allow us to live to get to a happy old age.”

They said together, “Amen, amen.”

I love the simplicity of how Tobit & Sarah pray. They are simply thankful to have each other and pray to live to an old age together. No matter what else happens on your wedding day, no matter how fancy the cake or whether the flowers are fake or real, the only part that really matters is that you are marrying your partner in life, because you love them, and that God willing you will live together to an old age.

Just because every post needs a picture here’s one of my favorite first dance pictures from Matthew & Kaitlin’s wedding.
